Become your own safe place after child sexual abuse

The nature of child sexual abuse is that it is intrusive. It can get in the way of normal childhood development including many if not all of the important milestones needed to grow up in an optimal fashion. Especially if a child is abused by a parent or trusted authority figure, the child may stumble forward with serious deficits in the trust department. Most of all, they may have trouble trusting themselves. Sadly, without help, issues with trust after sexual abuse can persist into adulthood.

If you experienced the trauma of child abuse, you may feel that there is nowhere safe to be. If that is the case for you, I have some good news: You can become your own safe place.

Ways to build trust within yourself after child sexual abuse

Here are some strategies which can be used to help build trust and safety within yourself:

  • Participation in peer support groups for survivors of abuse (either online or face-to-face)
  • Participation in therapy with a skilled professional who has a thorough familiarity with abuse dynamics
  • Cultivation of a “zero tolerance” policy in terms of negative or critical thinking directed at yourself. It costs nothing to be good to yourself but investing kindness in yourself can bring wonderful rewards.
  • Develop mindfulness. Learning to live in the moment can prevent painful memories from consuming the present and future.
  • Frequent or daily journaling to examine and correct your automatic negative beliefs can be useful. If you don’t like to write in longhand, send yourself an e-mail, sign up for an online diary, or take part in anonymous online forum discussions with others who are going through the same thing.
  • Indulge your senses: Seize opportunities to enjoy all beauty in the world
